"Just wanted to say thank you very much for arranging the caravan day course that my husband and myself recently attended. We thoroughly enjoyed the day and left feeling very much more confident. We also gain so much from the useful tips and ideas. Your course is well thought out and covered all of our questions plus so many more that we hadn’t even thought of. When I booked up I was looking to come along to support my husband and to get a better understanding in general but your instructor made it so easy to understand and the way he talked us through everything. Thank you once again. I’m so glad we came. We can now look forward to making the most of our van and enjoying trips away knowing we are better prepared."

Things to consider with First Aid Training
  • Qualified & Professional Instructors

As of 2015 Government and HSE regulations state that all instructors and trainers delivering First Aid Training must have a teaching/training qualification. They must also be able to prove at hand extensive  medical training and real-life experience.

They must also be registered and approved an awarding examinations body. Your instructor should display his qualification to you, and upon request be able to show his/her recent assessor or validation reports.

  • Current & Regulated Industry Compliant Practice

Your instructor should receive some annual practice updates and continual professional development. Your training should refer to the latest published guidelines and practice only.

All knowledge based content should support a practical skill or practice. Sound first aid training is not delivered from a powerpoint. It should be approved hands on training, to breed confidence and solid competency at a basic level.

  • Assessment & Accreditation with Government Awarding Body

You should undertake a combined theory and practical assessment of skills taught, which must be formally recorded and then certified by an awarding body.

This can only legally be done by an approved CIEH Trainer or equivalent.

The rules on what you can tow are different depending on when you passed your driving test.

You can view your driving licence information online to see if you’re allowed to tow.

Licences issued from 19 January 2013
From 19 January 2013, drivers passing a category B (car and small vehicle) test can tow:

  • small trailers weighing no more than 750kg
  • a trailer over 750kg as long as the combined weight of the trailer and towing vehicle is no more than 3,500kg Maximum Authorised Mass (MAM)

If you want to tow a trailer weighing more than 750kg, when the combined weight of the towing vehicle and trailer is more than 3,500kg, you’ll have to pass a further test and get B+E entitlement on your licence.

You’ll then be able to tow trailers up to 3,500kg.

Licences held from 1 January 1997
If you passed your driving test after 1 January 1997 and have an ordinary category B (car) licence, you can:

  • drive a vehicle up to 3.5 tonnes or 3,500kg MAM towing a trailer of up to750kg MAM
  • tow a trailer over 750kg MAM as long as the combined weight of the trailer and towing vehicle is no more than 3,500kg

For anything heavier you need to take a category B+E driving test.

Licences held before 1 January 1997
If you passed your car test before 1 January 1997 you are generally entitled to drive a vehicle and trailer combination up to 8.25 tonnes MAM.

This is the weight of a vehicle or trailer including the maximum load that can be carried safely when it’s being used on the road.

You also have entitlement to drive a minibus with a trailer over 750kg MAM.

Towing heavier combinations
If you want to tow heavier combinations, you’ll have to first apply for provisional entitlement to the new C1+E entitlement. You’ll then have to pass the category C theory test and C1+E practical test.

Once you’ve done this you can drive vehicles and trailers with a combined weight of up to 12 tonnes MAM.

  • Category B

You can drive vehicles up to 3,500kg Maximum Authorised Mass (MAM) with up to 8 passenger seats (with a trailer up to 750kg).

You can also tow heavier trailers if the total weight of vehicle and trailer isn’t more than 3,500kg.
